Workshops in 2010
April 2010:
Two workshops were held in April.
Saturday, April 10, 2010, 1-2pm: Foot Spa Day
The first workshop was a foot spa day, where volunteers came out with their gloves on to wash and dry feet while educating clients about foot care basics. Participants were provided with a goody bag complete with soaps and lotion. In the future, we would like to provide a more comprehensive foot care assessment session with certified healthcare providers.
Saturday, April 17, 2010, 1-2pm: Fitness and Heart Health
The second workshop held this month targeted clients' fitness and heart health. Participants engaged in a light group based exercise session.
March 2010:
In March, two new workshops were conducted at St. Christopher House: the Meeting Place. The first used a trivia game format to facilitate participant reflection and interactive discussion about prescription and non-prescription drugs. The IMAGINE team encouraged participants to share their experiences in order to identify and dispel common myths related to prescription and non-prescription drugs, as well as understand the risks involved in medication use.
The second workshop was a basic first aid and what if? session. The what if’s were scenarios ranging from what to do if you see someone have a seizure to what to do if you witness a fall and suspect a fracture. Participants were provided basic first aid kits equipped with a pair of gloves, bandages, gauze, a granola bar and alcohol swabs. Participants asked excellent questions and shared their experiences with the group during this interactive workshop.
February 2010:
February was a busy month for IMAGINE’s health promotion and education volunteers. This month we ran our "Sex in the City" series, which consisted of two workshops focused on sexual health issues. In the first workshop, participants engaged in a sex trivia game which highlighted the transmission, symptomatology, and dispelling of common myths regarding various STIs.
In the second workshop, participants engaged in an interactive discussion regarding forms of contraception. Sample contraceptive devices were brought to the session as educational tools and participants were given an opportunity to share their knowledge. Participants discussed common and lesser-known forms of contraceptives, and again common myths were discussed and dispelled.
